Separatists seize second building in east Ukrainian town, mayor suffers gunshot wound
KIEV - Armed pro-Russian separatists who took control of the police headquarters in the east Ukrainian town of Kostyantynivka also seized the town administration building on Monday, a spokesman for the regional government said.
Also on Monday, the city of Kharkiv's mayor was hospitalized after sustaining a gunshot wound. "I think it's the usual demands, the same as in other towns, the scenario doesn't change: a referendum and a federal system of government," said Ilya Suzdaliev, a spokesman for the Donetsk region administration, which includes Kostyantynivka.
A Reuters photographer in Kostyantynivka said he could see about 20 gunmen controlling the town administration building. He said they were wearing camouflage fatigues and masks. [jpost.com] 28/4/14
El alcalde de la ciudad de Járkov, Guennadi Kernes, fue gravemente herido en un ataque.
Según informó el servicio de prensa del Ayuntamiento de la ciudad, Kernes recibió una herida de bala en la espalda. En estos momentos se encuentra en un hospital local donde los médicos están luchando para salvarle la vida.
Un desconocido le disparó cuando el hacía 'jogging' por la mañana, según informan medios locales.
Un amigo de Kernes afirmó a una cadena local que un atacante disparó al alcalde desde un bosque. "La lesión es grave. The mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkov, Gennady Kernes, has been shot in the back by unidentified gunmen, the city council’s press service reports.....
At about 11:30 am (8:30 GMT) local time Kernes was taken to the local hospital. The City Hall's website says that doctors are fighting to save his life.
“They shot him in the back from the forest,” Kernes’s friend Yury Sapronov told Vesti Ukrainy news outlet. “The injury is serious. His lung is pierced and his liver pierced all the way through.”
A shell “allegedly from sniper rifle” was been found at the site where the mayor was shot, Irina Kushchenko from the public relations department of the city’s Executive Committee told RIA Novosti.
Kernes was shot while cycling, according to conflicting media reports, Yury Sidorenko from the mayor’s press service told RT. The doctors are currently operating, he added.

Gennady Kernes, Mayor of Ukraine’s eastern city of Khrakiv, was wounded in an assassination attempt that took place during his bicycle ride on the Belgorodskoye Highway, the press service of the mayor’s office said....
“He is currently on the operating table in a hospital emergency room. Doctors are fighting for his life,” the press service said in a statement.
The information about Kernes’s condition is not yet available. Kernes has received a penetrating gunshot wound to the back.

The controversial mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv was on Monday in critical condition, “fighting for his life” after being shot in the back in a morning attack by an unidentified assailant, local officials said....
Iryna Kushchenko, a spokeswoman for the local government, said Gennady Kernes was attacked while riding his bicycle on the outskirts of the city.
His bodyguards were following in a car but were not close enough to intervene, she said.
Another town hall official said Kernes was "hit by a bullet in the back", adding that "he is being operated on. Doctors are fighting for his life."
