Scholz: Germany allowed Kyiv to attack Russian territory to save Kharkov

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany allowed the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to use German weapons transferred to Kyiv for attacks on Russian territory bordering the Kharkov region. According to him, this was necessary to make it difficult for Russia to strike Kharkov.

Scholz argues that Moscow could use its border "as a protective shield for massive attacks on this major city." His speech was broadcast by the state channel Phoenix.

Scholz officially lifted the ban on the use of German weapons by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Russian territory on May 31. In turn, the representative of the German Cabinet of Ministers, Wolfgang Buchner, stated that Berlin, by supplying weapons to Kyiv, would not become a party to the conflict.

  1. On May 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow now has no plans to take control of Kharkov. The operation of the Russian army on the border of the Kharkov region is needed in order to create a buffer zone and protect the regions of the Russian Federation from shelling by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the head of state explained.
