French Parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings that Macron be removed from power

The resolution to remove French President Emmanuel Macron from power was signed by 81 MPs from the leftist New Popular Front bloc, Franceinfo radio station reports.

“Faced with Macron’s refusal to appoint a prime minister from among the members of the coalition that came first in the July 7 legislative elections, the authors of the resolution wish to begin impeachment proceedings against the president,” the France Defiant party said. Such a refusal occurred for the first time in the history of France.

The decision to initiate impeachment proceedings is made by the Bureau of the National Assembly (lower house of parliament). Then the resolution must be approved by the legislation commission and two-thirds of the deputies of the National Assembly. The upper house of parliament - the Senate - carries out the same procedures. As a result, the resolution must be supported by 617 out of 925 deputies of both chambers.

Macron ruled out the participation of representatives of the left-wing coalition in the government, despite the fact that the coalition won 182 seats out of 577 in the country's National Assembly in the elections.
