Tunisia to hold presidential election on October 6

In power since 2019, President Kaïs Saïed announced on Tuesday Tunisia will hold  a presidential election on October 6. He did not specify whether he would run for re-election.

Saied, a constitutional specialist, took full control of the country in 2021, ruling by decree after dismissing his prime minister and parliament, with many of his opponents now behind bars.

He had a new constitution approved by referendum in 2022 that created a presidential system with a parliament that has only limited powers.
